Join fellow Yalies in Beacon for “Music of the American Revolution,” presented by Manley Roberts ’83 JD and sponsored by the Beacon Historical Society as part of the community’s commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary.

Manley will explore three parts of America’s musical history: musical life in the colonies, the songs of the American Revolution, and the “field music” played by the armies on both sides of the war.

Discover Founders who were musicians and musical inventors; the singing, dancing, church music, and ballad operas popular in colonial America; and the European and African musical traditions that helped shape American music.

The program will feature anthems and marches sung by British soldiers and American Patriots, including The British Grenadiers, Chester, and Yankee Doodle. Manley will even invite the audience to sing along, recalling a time when communal singing was an everyday part of preserving culture, building community, and expressing revolutionary spirit.

 The evening concludes with the story of the fife and drum players and cavalry buglers whose music kept troops moving and communicated commanders’ orders in camp, on the march, and on the battlefield.
